Wednesday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: For students returning to Lasallian schools this week, that they find in their classrooms teachers who know their names and expect good things of them.

Today’s Gospel | Luke 4:38-44

After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them.

At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.

At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

But Jesus Christ did not limit himself to entrusting to his apostles the work of teaching catechism. He did this work himself and taught the principal truths of our religion, as reported in a great number of places in his Gospel where he tells his apostles, I must announce the Gospel of the kingdom of God because this is why I have been sent. Say the same thing, that this is why Jesus Christ has sent you and why the Church, whose ministers you are, employs you. Bring all the care needed, then, to fulfill this function with as much zeal and success as the saints have had fulfilling it.

Prayer

Eternal Father, your Son healed a fever and then rose before dawn to go somewhere quiet. He did not stay where he was wanted, because there were other towns waiting. Give us that same discipline about our own attention, that we neither exhaust ourselves nor settle where it is comfortable. Show us who is still waiting to be reached. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
