Br. Robert signs the GCE commitment.

As part of the activities of the 46th General Chapter, Brother Superior General Robert Schieler, FSC, has signed the commitment of the Lasallian Family to Pope Francis’ Global Compact on Education (GCE).

The GCE is a Papal initiative calling upon all of the Church’s educational ministries and institutional to revitalize the character and quality of education for the sake of building a better world.

In September of 2019, Pope Francis announced the GCE, an ambitious movement that asks nations to pursue a renewed model of education rooted in a “dialogue on how we are shaping the future of our planet and the need to employ the talents of all, since all change requires an educational process aimed at developing a new universal solidarity and a more welcoming society.” (Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the Launch of the Global Compact on Education, September 2019.)

In his message on the occasion of the signing, Brother Robert stated, “The Pope’s proposal for a Global Compact on Education (GCE) draws from the deep wells of our expertise, and more importantly, our charism to, “provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially to the poor according to the ministry which the Church has entrusted to it.”

The Institute also has launched the website, globalcompact.lasalle.org, where every member of the Lasallian Family can learn more about the GCE, as well as how Lasallians around the world are and will be participating.

Developed over the course of a year by an international ad hoc committee of Brothers and Partners, Lasallian participation will take place in phases through December, 2023. It is built around seven thematic areas of educational needs and opportunities that Lasallian ministries can choose for activities.  Once underway, activity reports can be shared via the Institute website and District and Regional social media platforms.

“This is a moment,” Brother Robert’s message continues, “when every member of the Lasallian Family is invited to take part, even to play a leading role. Therefore, I personally urge each one of you, Brothers, Lasallian Partners, and members of the educational communities, to contribute to building a better world; a world that for many represents a utopian ideal out of reach, but for us represents a dream that can be realized.
