Michael Richards has announced his decision to step down as principal of San Miguel High School, Tucson, AZ, at the end of the 2021-22 school year.
In a letter to the San Miguel community, Richards wrote, “Over these past three academic years, it has been my great privilege to serve as your principal and now after careful reflection and much prayer, I have decided that this Academic Year 2021-22 will be my last in your service.”
He continued, “The many important initiatives like those (to which the school is committed) require a principal who is able to invest herself or himself at a significant level; and after the many necessary demands of the past several years, I recognize that such a level of investment is something that I will no longer be able to give to our school after this academic year.”
Richards was appointed principal in 2019-20, returning to the school after earlier stints as a founding faculty member, assistant principal, and director of its corporate work study program.
Commenting on Richard’s decision, San Miguel president David Mason stated, “The San Miguel community expresses our gratitude to principal Mike Richards. His focused and thoughtful leadership over the last three years greatly benefitted our students, families, faculty, and staff and placed the school in a position of strength, both academically and spiritually.”
According to Mason, a national search for Richard’s successor will begin within the next few weeks. Both Richards and Mason confirmed that Richards will assist in the new principal’s transition into the leadership position.
