Saturday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: For God’s blessing on our labors, that they may bring to us our daily bread and that they always be done with humility, honesty, and justice.

Today’s Gospel | Luke 6:1-5

While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a Sabbath his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. Some Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Have you not read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry? How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his companions?” Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”

From the Sixth Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

You share in the ministry of the Guardian Angels by making known to children the truths of the Gospel, which you have been chosen by God to announce.  You must teach them how to put these truths into practice, and you must have very great zeal to procure their accomplishment of this practice.  In imitation of the great Apostle, you must encourage them to live in a manner worthy of God, because God has called them to his kingdom and his glory.  Your zeal must go so far in this that to achieve it, you are ready to give your very life, so dear to you are the children entrusted to you.

Prayer

Eternal Father, your Son called us to be faithful to your word by putting them into acts of faithfulness.  As we make our way through each day, help us to live the spirit of your teachings and the truth of your Kingdom.  Make of us sincere disciples who give ourselves fully to you as we walk together in your ways.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
