Memorial of Saint Philip Neri, priest

Intention: For all seniors who are graduating from Lasallian schools this year, that they may be blessed with fulfilling futures, living their lives as instruments of God’s loving and saving presence to the world.

Today’s Gospel | John 17:1-11a

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come.  Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him.  Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.  I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.  Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began.

“I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world.  They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.  Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.  I pray for them.  I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them.  And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”

From the Sixteenth Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

What a consolation for those who have procured the salvation of souls: to see in heaven a great number whom they have helped to obtain the advantage of enjoying so great a happiness!  This will happen to those who have instructed many people about the truths of religion, as an angel said to the Prophet Daniel: Those who instruct many people in Christian justice will shine like stars throughout all eternity.  They will shine, indeed, in the midst of those whom they have instructed, who will eternally bear witness to the great gratitude they have for so many instructions they received from their teachers, whom they will regard as the cause, after God, of their salvation.

Eternal Father, you sent your Son to be our shepherd.  He watched over and protected his flock, even when it meant he had to lay down his life.  Today, help us to hear and follow his voice.  May those who have wandered away from his love find their way back.  Keep us together in him, and may we imitate him in our care and vigilance for one another and for all who you have entrusted to our care.  We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
