Monday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: That we all will come to share a deep and unconditional respect for the sanctity and dignity of life and of all of God’s creation.

Today’s Gospel | Mark 2:18-22

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast.  People came to Jesus and objected, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?  As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast.  But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.  No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak.  If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse.  Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins.  Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined.  Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.”

From the Fourth Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

Be convinced of what Saint Paul says, that you plant and water the seed, but it is God through Jesus Christ who makes it grow and brings your work to fulfillment. So when it happens that you encounter some difficulty in the guidance of your disciples, when there are some who do not profit from your instructions and you observe a certain spirit of immorality in them, turn to God with confidence. Very insistently ask Jesus Christ to make his Spirit come alive in you, for he has chosen you to do his work.

Prayer

Eternal Father, your Son brought to us the hope of new beginnings, of renewal and redemption in our lives.  But for these gifts to be fulfilled we first must be open to them and to the change of heart to which they call us.  Help us to trust in your ways as we journey toward a better world in you, one built through our service of others, especially of those who are most in need of you.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
