Intention: For God’s blessing on the new school year and our Lasallian mission of accompanying students in the sacred and urgent work of building the Kingdom of God.
Today’s Gospel | Luke 12:35-40
Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have the servants recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”
From the First Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle
It is characteristic of the providence of God and of his vigilance over human conduct to substitute for fathers and mothers people who have enough knowledge and zeal to bring children to the knowledge of God and of his mysteries. According to the grace of Jesus Christ that God has given to them, they are like good architects, who give all possible care and attention to lay the foundation of religion and Christian piety in the hearts of these children, a great number of whom would otherwise be abandoned.
You, then, whom God has called to this ministry, work according to the grace that has been given to you to instruct by teaching and to exhort by encouraging those who are entrusted to your care, guiding them with attention and vigilance in order to fulfill toward them the principal duty of fathers and mothers toward their children.
Eternal Father, your Son reminded us that only those who lived with faith-filled and open hearts will be ready for your call. The noise and distractions of life can make it hard for us to remember your presence. Help us to live our lives always ready to encounter you in the people and experiences of each day. Bless us with eyes to seek you, ears to listen for you, and hearts to welcome you. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
