Tuesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: For a spirit of humility that will take us beyond the boundaries of our fears and prejudices and into a life of compassion and giving.

Today’s Gospel | Matthew 11:20-24

Jesus began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And as for you, Capernaum: Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.

For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

From the First Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

God wills not only that all come to the knowledge of truth but also that all be saved.  He cannot truly desire this without providing the means for it and, therefore, without giving children the teachers who will assist them in the fulfillment of his plan. This, says Saint Paul, is the field that God cultivates, the building that he is raising, and you are the ones whom he has chosen to help in this work by announcing to these children the Gospel of his Son and the truths that are contained in it.

This is why you must honor your ministry and keep trying to save some of these children.  Because God, according to the expression of the same Apostle, has made you his ministers in order to reconcile them to him and has entrusted to you for this purpose the word of reconciliation for them, exhort them as if God were exhorting them through you, for you have been destined to cultivate these young plants by announcing to them the truths of the Gospel and to procure for them the means of salvation appropriate to their development.

Prayer

Eternal Father, many times Jesus taught that we are accountable to you for the kind of life that we choose to live.  You call us to righteousness, to act with integrity and compassion, to be humble and forgiving, to build a world of peace and justice.  Grant us the grace to be faithful to your call.  Help us to turn away from sinfulness and make of ourselves a virtuous people.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
