Intention: That God will bless the Young Lasallian Assembly taking place this week, filling its participants with faith in His holy presence and will and zeal for living the Gospel.
Today’s Gospel | Luke 1:57-60, 80
When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, “No. He will be called John.” But they answered her, “There is no one among your relatives who has this name.” So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,” and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. Then fear came upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, “What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
From the Meditation on the Nativity of St. John the Baptist | Saint John Baptist de La Salle
By your vocation you are obliged to announce the truths of the Gospel every day. Practice those that are required of all Christians before you undertake to teach them to others. Although you do not have the grace, like Saint John, of being the precursor of Jesus Christ, you do possess the grace of being a successor in his ministry. Be assured, however, that you will make this effective for others only insofar as it has produced its effect in you. See that it does so without delay.
Eternal Father, John the Baptist lived his life to make way for Jesus, doing your will with fire and without counting the cost to himself. We pray that you will grace us with zealous hearts and spirits. Take our feet where they need to go and open our hands to reach out those who we might serve. Give us ears to hear their cries and eyes to see their needs. May we give of our time and gifts to build up your Kingdom here on earth. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
