Memorial of Saint Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr | Thanksgiving Day

Intention: That on this day of giving thanks for the blessings in our lives, we will remember that all gifts come from God, and that our greatest show of thanks would be to use those gifts to help build God’s kingdom.

Today’s Gospel | Luke 17:11-19

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.  As he was entering a village, ten persons with leprosy met him.  They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!”  And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.”  As they were going they were cleansed.  And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.  He was a Samaritan.  Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not?  Where are the other nine?  Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?”  Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

From the Second Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

God has had the goodness to remedy so great a misfortune by the establishment of the Christian Schools, where the teaching is offered free of charge and entirely for the glory of God, where the children are kept all day, learn to read, to write, and their religion, and are always kept busy, so that when their parents want them to go to work, they are prepared for employment.

Thank God, who has had the goodness to employ you to procure such an important advantage for children. Be faithful and exact to do this without any payment, so that you can say with Saint Paul, the source of my consolation is to announce the Gospel free of charge, without having it cost anything to those who hear me.

Prayer

Eternal Father, on this day of thanksgiving, we pray with gratefulness for the many gifts that we have in our lives.  As we receive and embrace these gifts, we remember and pray for our sisters and brothers who live with sorrow and deprivation.  Send us your spirit to instruct and guide our faith, so that we might show our gratitude to you by always striving to be channels of your peace and justice.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
