Memorial of Saint Leo the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church

Intention: That all people will work together tirelessly to bring peace and safety to those whose homes are being torn by war or shattered by crime.

Today’s Gospel | Luke 16: 9-15

Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.  The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones.

If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth?  If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours?  No servant can serve two masters.

He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all these things and sneered at him.  And he said to them, “You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God.”

From the Meditation on Saint Leo | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

When we are called to an apostolic work, if we do not know how to join zeal to action, all we do for our neighbor will have little effect.  In your work you ought to devote your effort to oppose the interior and exterior enemies that would prevent the progress of your disciples in piety, mainly, their wayward companions and their own evil inclinations. There is no means you must fail to use to prevent your students from being corrupted by either one of these enemies.

Is this what you try especially to do to procure the good of their souls?  Often reflect that it is for this purpose that God has commissioned you.

Eternal Father, you have given us our lives so that we will use them to do good.  How many times have we abused your trust, choosing to act selfishly without thought for you or for others?  Help us to leave our selfishness behind and to make amends with anyone that we have treated dishonestly or unkindly. Help us to be persons of integrity who make our world a better place and accompany one another on our journey to better know and serve you.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
