Intention: On this Independence Day, let there be a spirit of freedom in our nation that remembers that the purpose of the liberties that we enjoy is to make ourselves into a nation that is strong and compassionate, determined and wise, challenging and just.
Today’s Gospel | Matthew 8:28-34
When Jesus came to the territory of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs who were coming from the tombs met him. They were so savage that no one could travel by that road. They cried out, “What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?” Some distance away a herd of many swine was feeding. The demons pleaded with him, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.” And he said to them, “Go then!” They came out and entered the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea where they drowned. The swineherds ran away, and when they came to the town they reported everything, including what had happened to the demoniacs. Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they begged him to leave their district.
From the First Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle
This is what God does by diffusing the fragrance of his teaching throughout the whole world by human ministers. Just as he commanded light to shine out of darkness, so he kindles a light in the hearts of those destined to announce his word to children, so that they may be able to enlighten those children by unveiling for them the glory of God.
Because God in his mercy has given you such a ministry, do not falsify his word, but gain glory before him by unveiling his truth to those whom you are charged to instruct. Let this be your whole effort in the instructions you give them, looking upon yourselves as the ministers of God and the dispensers of his mysteries.
Eternal Father, your Son called us to be one body in him, a community of faithfulness and wholeness. Send us your spirit so that we can do this. In the midst of separation, may speak for unity. In the midst of turbulence, may speak for peace. In the midst of selfishness, may speak for justice. Break down the walls which separate and unite us, and make us worthy to claim that we are your children. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
