God Is With UsThe Feast of Saint Stephen, First Martyr

Intention:  That, in this Octave of Christmas, we will continue to find ways to be the Body of Christ and his Good News to all of the world.

Today’s Gospel | Matthew 10:17-22

Jesus said to his disciples: “Beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved.”

From the Meditation on Saint Stephen, First Martyr | St. John Baptist de La Salle

You have been chosen by God to make Jesus Christ known and to proclaim him. Therefore, admire the goodness of God to you, as the same Apostle says, provided, however, that you remain firm in the state where his goodness has placed you. Following the example of Saint Stephen, then, make Jesus Christ known to those whom you have to instruct. Teach them the rules of the Christian life and the means they must use to be saved. For this purpose God entrusted to you the ministry in which you are employed. Do not become unworthy of it by negligence.

Prayer for the Day

Eternal Father, your Son came into this world so that all of us might have life and have it to the full.  Kindle within us the zeal to follow your Son, living as we must to remain true to your will for us.  On this feast of Saint Stephen, help us to find in ourselves true courage of faith, the true riches of self-giving, and the true strength of humility.  May we in this Octave of Christmas transform our lives so that we may desire nothing more than to be your hands and heart in the world.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
