Let us rememberMonday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: That we may be a people of life, speaking for the dignity and needs of all people, especially the poor, the oppressed, the exploited, the misunderstood, and the forgotten.

Today’s Gospel | Luke 21: 1-4

When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

From the Eighth Meditation for Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

It will not, then, be enough for you to have instructed your disciples about the mysteries and the truths of our holy religion if you have not helped them learn the chief Christian virtues and if you have not taken an altogether special care to help them put these virtues into practice, as well as all the good of which they are capable at their age. For no matter how much faith they may have or how lively it may be, if they do not commit themselves to practice good works, their faith will be of no use to them.

Prayer

Eternal Father, it is good that we know how to give.  But you taught that it is not enough to give from our abundance, but that we also learn to sacrifice.  If we are truly to know what it means to do your will, then we must be willing to let go of our own security and to trust in your care.  Help us today to understand that, to serve you, we must give deeply of ourselves.  Inspire us through your Word to empty ourselves for others, especially those in need and those who have been entrusted to our care.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
