Intention: For those entrusted with the care of the children and young people of our world, that they will be channels of God’s wisdom, compassion, fidelity, and love.
Today’s Gospel | Luke 19:1-10
At that time Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”
From the Meditation on the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin | Saint John Baptist de La Salle
You have the happiness of being in God’s house, and you are bound there to his service. You must be filled with graces by the holy practice of prayer and strive to practice the virtues that are most fitting to your state. By these holy exercises, you will be able to fulfill your duties well, for you will not fulfill them as God requires of you except insofar as you are faithful to and diligent at the holy practice of prayer. By this means the Holy Spirit will come to you and will teach you, as Jesus Christ promises his holy Apostles, all the truths of religion and the maxims of Christianity that you must know and practice perfectly, because you are obliged to inspire them in others.
Eternal Father, living in today’s world can be like a wilderness. So many times we have difficulty seeing you because of the many things that can get in our way. Thank you for your great love in calling us to you, for staying near to us despite our sinfulness, for giving us the chance to find you and to be made whole again. Strengthen us and guide us as we learn to live each day with simplicity, humility, and hospitality. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
