Intention: For a deeper awareness of and concern for the plight of homeless and displaced persons throughout the world, that all might work to eradicate their suffering and its causes.
Today’s Gospel | Matthew 11:25-30
At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
From the Sixteenth Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle
Saint Paul complained because some of the Corinthians said that they belonged to Paul, while others said that they belonged to Apollo. He told them that each of them would receive his reward in proportion to his labor. This ought to make you realize that your happiness in heaven will be greater than what will be enjoyed by those who have worked only for their own salvation, and it will be much greater in proportion to the number of children you have instructed and won over to God.
Eternal Father, each day we work hard to build our lives. Sometimes, our possessions and our achievements begin to look to us like the meaning of our lives. They are not. In your plan, there are the things that are part of life and there are the things that give us life. Help us to know the difference. We give thanks for the real riches of truth and freedom, of peace, joy, and inspiration. Heal our blindness and open our eyes and hearts to the light of your saving presence. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
