The Trustees and President of Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School in Oakland, California are pleased to announce the appointment of Ana Hernández as the school’s founding Principal, effective July 1, 2017.
Ms. Hernández currently serves as Director of the Magis Program at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, California. The Magis Program supports middle school and high school students who are first-generation college bound, from low socio-economic backgrounds and from underrepresented groups in higher education
Ms. Hernández immigrated from Mexico to the United States as a child with her family. After attending Oakland Public Schools, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Occidental College, Los Angeles, California and a Master of Education degree from Mills College, Oakland, California. She has continued her graduate studies in teaching and educational leadership at Mills College. Ms. Hernández brings more than a decade of educational and instructional leadership experience as a counselor, teacher, principal and program director. Her passion is the education of youth from underserved communities.
Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School President Michael Anderer expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for Ms. Hernández’s partnership in leading the school, stating, “Together with the trustees and the rich tradition that already exists among the St. Elizabeth’s HS alumni, we will build a new educational community that is marked by excellence, innovation and compassion. Along with her broad educational experience and leadership, Ms. Hernández’s witness, faith and tireless commitment to traditionally marginalized communities will model and animate the type of Lasallian educational community that we want to create for the youth and families of Oakland and the surrounding East Bay community.”
“I am thrilled to be back serving Oakland youth,” says Ms. Hernández, “particularly as founding Principal of Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School. We are able to truly shape our model in a very intentional way. I am honored and humbled to support making the Lasallian and Cristo Rey vision come alive in inner city Oakland, my home!”
Over the next two months, Mr. Anderer and Ms. Hernández will add four more members to the school’s founding team of administrators: a Director of the Corporate Work Study Program, a Director of Admissions, a Personalized Learning Coordinator and a Director of Development. The administration will look forward to welcoming 125 freshmen in the fall of 2018. Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School ultimately will serve 500 low-income youth and their families from the underserved neighborhoods of the East Bay region of Northern California.
Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School is a Roman Catholic, co-educational, secondary school scheduled to open in the fall of 2018 on the campus formerly home to Saint Elizabeth’s High School.
