Feast of Saint Luke, Evangelist
Intention: For all who seek roles of leadership and advocacy in society, that their hearts and minds will be open to God’s wisdom and guidance.
Today’s Gospel | Luke 10:1-9
The Lord Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.’”
From the Meditation on the Feast of Saint Luke | Saint John Baptist de La Salle
Your conduct must be so wise in their regard, as it is for you, that your students will respect it, because they will see that it is far above ordinary human behavior and free from the passions that destroy, or at least diminish, the respect due to those who are responsible for leading others. Finally, your way of life must be a model for them, because they ought to find in you the virtues they are to practice.
Prayer
Eternal Father, on this day we pray for the grace to always be prepared to greet you when you find us in the business of our days. Make room in our hearts for you and for the people who need us. Help us to receive the One who said, “I am the light of the world” and to welcome in his name all of the friends and strangers who come to us each day. May we be ready and vigilant to accept the love that you offer to us and have the courage to share it with others. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
