SMHS StoneThursday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: For the people of Paris and the nation of France, that God’s gifts of healing, resilience, and determination will guide them through their time of pain and loss.

Today’s Gospel | Luke 19: 41-44

As Jesus drew near Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides. They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

From the Seventh Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

God, having chosen and destined Saint Paul, as the Apostle says, to preach the Gospel to the nations, gave him such knowledge of the mysteries of Jesus Christ that he was enabled, like a good architect, to lay the foundation for the building of the faith and of the religion which God raised up in the cities where Saint Paul announced the Gospel according to the grace that God had given him. He was the first of all to preach in these places. That is why he says quite justly that those to whom he announced the Gospel are his work and that he has begotten them in Jesus Christ.

Without comparing yourselves to this great saint (and keeping in mind the due proportion between your work and his), you can say that you are doing the same thing and fulfilling the same ministry in your profession.

You must, then, regard your work, which has been entrusted to you by pastors and by fathers and mothers, as one of the most important and necessary services in the Church.

Eternal Father, you reach out to us every day to loosen from us the chains of our sinfulness and to deliver us from our ignorance.  You call us to gather around you and to be filled with your holy spirit that restores us and redeems us.  Grant that as you seek to make us free, we will open our hearts to receive this gift that you give to us through your constant love.  May each new day find us awake to your presence and filled with zeal to do your will.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
