SMHS StoneThursday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Weekly Intention: For a deeper concern for the plight of homeless and displaced persons throughout the world, that all might work to eradicate these persons’ suffering and its causes.

Today’s Gospel | Matthew 6:7-15

Jesus said to his disciples: “In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.  Do not be like them.  Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“This is how you are to pray:

‘Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.’

“If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

From the Tenth Meditation for the Time of Retreat | St. John Baptist de La Salle

You must encourage (the children in your care), in accord with the teaching of Jesus Christ, not only to be satisfied with doing good actions but also to avoid doing them before others in order to be esteemed and honored, because those who act this way have already received their reward.

It is important that you teach them to pray to God, as our Lord taught those who followed him, and to pray with much piety and in secret, that is, with much recollection, getting rid of all thoughts that could distract their minds during the time of prayer, so that they will be occupied solely with God and easily obtain what they ask of him.

Prayer

Eternal Father, Jesus taught us how to pray to you. With each passing day, may we learn better how to live the words of his prayer.  Inspire our thoughts, words, and actions, that we may do your will and serve you faithfully. Strengthen our character, that we may speak truthfully and act justly. Increase our compassion, that we may seek to forgive and know how to accept forgiveness.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.  Amen.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
