Special from De Marillac Office of Mission Advancement. De Marillac Academy proudly announces the publication of PATHS AHEAD, the third annual De Marillac 8th Grade Anthology. In this text, these young men and women on the threshold of entering high school discover their own voices, make themselves visible to the world that frequently overlooks them, and stun the reader with their vision, compassion and strength.
Rich Hill, their teacher, wrote in the forward, “There is empowerment in these explorations. These young travelers are navigating through great difficulties and dangers. At times, their trails will completely disappear, and it will be much more like floating in dark space than walking on firm ground. Yet, those are the transformative moments when the greatest treasures of human existence are found, when we realize who we truly are. . . . These extraordinary students have become the glimmering stars above our community in the Tenderloin, and all of us at De Marillac Academy are tremendously grateful for their awesome light. Their brilliance both awakens and reveals, creating needed clarity as we reach for a more hopeful future.”
Mike Daniels, president of De Marillac Academy, wrote to the eighth grade authors, “Each of you is a natural wonder, evidenced by the extraordinary example of your conscious living, your compassion, your integrity, your perseverance!”
De Marillac Academy also has released a new video, “Rise,” that features students from the school. “Rise” amplifies the actual voices and images of youth growing up in the Tenderloin and SOMA neighborhoods of San Francisco. According to the school’s website, “To turn a blind eye or a deaf ear to them is to risk our own future. We are very grateful to HEIST Projects for their generosity and collaboration.”
