The Lasallian Student Leadership (LSL) Curriculum Review and Planning Committee met February 7-8 at Mont La Salle in Napa, CA. The meeting was hosted by the District Office of Education.

Committee members are District Young Lasallians Director Ms. Heather Ruple; Ms. Stephanie Roybal, Vocations Team Coordinator, and Ms. Rose Ann Holmes, Activities Director, Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento, CA; Mr. Stan Cordero, Director of Lasallian Student Life, Justin- Sienna High School, Napa, CA; Mr. Ed O’Connor, Director of Student Life, La Salle High School, Pasadena, CA; and Mr. Joe Welling, Activities Director, Mullen High School, Denver, CO.

The focus of the meeting was on key questions regarding the LSL program’s effectiveness, including identifying the leadership and formation needs of Young Lasallian student leaders today, as well as how the program can address those needs.

According to Ms. Ruple, the committee reviewed the program’s current curriculum and made plans to develop several new skills sessions to provide the strongest leadership training possible. Additional plans are underway to address the Lasallian formation needs of participants in ways that will allow students to take ownership of and have an active role in the Catholic Lasallian identity of their schools.

The Lasallian Student Leaders program in its current form is now in its 12th year of service. The annual LSL summer gathering brings together student leaders for a week of leadership, mission, and faith development. The program seeks to equip them with an understanding of the inherent responsibility that they have for the Lasallian educational mission as they take up their respective leadership roles in their schools.

The committee ended its meeting looking forward to building on the already-strong LSL program and to welcoming another cohort of Young Lasallians to Saint Mary’s College of California in July of 2015.
