Student Volunteers Go International

District students are preparing for international volunteer work this spring and summer. Three 2009 graduates from San Miguel High School in Tucson, Arizona, will travel to the Philippines to volunteer their services at the Bahay Pag-asa Youth Center. The facility was founded by the De La Salle Christian Brothers to help young boys and teens who have arrest records and who need education and training to find a place in normal life. San Miguel alums Jose Herrera, Adonis Trujillo and Luis Vanegas, along with biology teacher Br. Dan Fenton, will travel to Bacolod City on the island of Negros to teach English, math and science. The volunteers are being helped in their effort by San Miguel High School students who have formed Club Pag-asa which will sponsor a penny drive to raise funds for scholarships and educational materials for the Filipino youths.

In California, Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley plans a volunteer experience in India for several of its students to take place this March. Look for a report on this trip in next month’s news.
