Monday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: That all people will work together selflessly to bring peace and safety to those places that are being torn by war and battered by violence.

Today’s Gospel | Mark 1:14-20

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment.  The Kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen.  Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  Then they left their nets and followed him.  He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.  They too were in a boat mending their nets.  Then he called them.  So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

From the Eighth Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

Consider that because you must work in your ministry for the building of the Church on the foundation which has been laid by the holy Apostles, by the instruction you are giving to the children whom God has entrusted to your care and who are entering into the construction of this building, you must do your work as the Apostles carried out their ministry.

…You, then, who have succeeded the Apostles in their work of catechizing and instructing the poor, if you want to make your ministry as useful to the Church as it can be, you must every day teach them catechism, helping them learn the basic truths of our religion, following the example of the Apostles, which is that of Jesus Christ, who devoted himself every day to this task.

Prayer

Eternal Father, you invite us every day to be the instruments of your peace and the workers in the fields that you plant. Stay with us as we travel through life and as we share the risk and challenge of living our faith. Turn our doubts to courage and our confusion to confidence.  Teach us to speak your words to others, especially those to whom you have sent us and who you have entrusted to our care.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
