Friday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Intention: For God’s blessing on all Lasallian educators, especially those participating in the Buttimer Institute this week.

Today’s Gospel | Matthew 9:9-13

As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post.  He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.  While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples.  The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”  He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.  Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice.  I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

From the Seventh Meditation for the Time of Retreat | Saint John Baptist de La Salle

You must, then, regard your work, which has been entrusted to you by pastors and by fathers and mothers, as one of the most important and necessary services in the Church.

This means that you are called to lay the foundation for the building of the Church when you instruct children in the mystery of the most Holy Trinity and the mysteries accomplished by Jesus Christ when he was on earth.

For, according to Saint Paul, without faith it is impossible to please God and consequently be saved and enter the homeland of heaven, because faith is the foundation of the hope that we have.  The knowledge, then, that each must have of the faith, the instruction that must be given concerning the faith to those who are ignorant of it, is one of the most important things in our religion.

Prayer

Eternal Father, your Son came to heal the wounds of sin in all of our lives.  We need you to help us in our moments of selfishness and self-righteousness.  Bless us with your grace each day, strengthening us to be true and constant disciples.  May all that we do be part of the hand of your saving presence in our broken and hurting world.  We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.  Amen.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts forever.
