La Salle Prep Taps Principal to Serve as Next President

After searching nationwide for a leader, La Salle Catholic College Preparatory has named its principal, Andrew Kuffner, as its new president/principal and chief executive officer. Kuffner will assume the role on July 1, 2018.

As the school’s chief executive, Kuffner will lead the faculty and academics at the 700-student co-ed Catholic high school in Milwaukie. He will report directly to La Salle Prep’s Board of Trustees.

“We are confident that Andrew Kuffner will continue La Salle’s tradition of academic excellence, faith, and service,” said Mark Auxier, chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees.  “He is dedicated to the Lasallian mission of educating students and empowering them to serve.”

Kuffner, a 1991 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Portland, has been part of La Salle’s administrative leadership team for 17 years, the last five as principal. He started working at La Salle as a physics teacher shortly after graduating with a degree in secondary education from the University of Portland in 1996. He became La Salle’s vice principal for academics in 2000, the same year he earned a master’s degree in educational policies, foundations, and administration from Portland State University.”

I am honored and humbled to be entrusted with this ministry and to lead such a talented group of educators,” said Kuffner.  “I will work to advance La Salle’s excellence by providing a human, Christian, transformative, and relevant 21st-century education that prepares our students for college and whatever else God calls them to do.”

Kuffner said he is confident in La Salle’s current faculty and leadership staff and their ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the students and school. For example, Kuffner said he will put Chief Financial Officer Matthew Winningham in charge of school operations such as campus development, admissions, communications, human resources, advancement, and the business office.

“In Matt Winningham’s decade as La Salle’s chief financial officer, the school has retired all debt and improved its facilities,” said Kuffner.  “Matt also has developed a financial aid model that gives support to more than half of La Salle’s students.”

Kuffner said he also will focus on refining the school’s pathway for students with learning differences, enhancing the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Innovation and Design Center, and building up La Salle’s arts and STEM programs.

Kuffner will assume his new role on July 1, 2018, just a day after La Salle’s president and chief executive officer, Denise L. Jones, retires. Jones led the school for 15 years.
