Today’s Gospel | John 15:9-17
Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.
“I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.”
From the Meditation on Saint Matthias, Apostle | Saint John Baptist de La Salle
Judas sold and betrayed Jesus Christ, his Lord and God, so that they might put him to death. Then he gave himself to the devil by dying in despair. After the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven, the Apostles assembled in a house to pray and to prepare themselves to receive the Holy Spirit. At Saint Peter’s request, they chose Saint Matthias to take Judas’ place. This holy disciple was admitted among the number of the Apostles only after a common prayer was recited publicly by Saint Peter in the name of all the Apostles and disciples, who were praying together in the same place.
This shows us that in all we do for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, we ought to undertake nothing without praying to ask God for the light and the grace we need to succeed in whatever we undertake for him in this holy ministry, which can succeed only insofar as we are aided by his help and directed by his Holy Spirit.
Eternal Father, in your Son you revealed the power and fulfillment of your love. As we make our way through our lives, may we grow in our faithfulness to your ways, especially in our love for one another. Help us to always be persons of compassion and justice, of patience and forgiveness, of humility and service. We ask this of you who lives and reigns with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
